If there is any further need to prove that the approach to reading the Law which I laid out in Part 1 and Part 2 of this series is correct, the simplest proof is that many of the most important laws are incomprehensible without it.

  • Don’t work on the Sabbath. (What exactly constitutes work?)
  • Honor your father and your mother. (How exactly?)
  • Love your neighbor as yourself. (What does that entail?)

Laws like these are simply not specific enough to have any interpretation according to the letter, and must be understood according to their spirit.
